MD-A08 // "Recent Faves" (2023-07)

MD-A08 was created for someone who was going to receive it as part of a media exchange in 2023-07 or so. I've shared it with a couple other people.

In general, you can probably say the theme here is probably either something like millennial angst or "high energy" but not everything fully fits that vibe.

The original copy of disc was recorded in SP mode on an MDS-DL1 then titled with NetMD, but I've built it a handful of different ways, since.

  1. West Coast // Step Rockets
    • Much of what I listen to is really stuff from Spotify's weekly recommendation playlists.
  2. Overcome // Nothing But Thieves
    • Nothing But Thieves has a new album out and this is on it. Feels mid-key pridey but you can really apply it to almost any situation
  3. Shatter Us // The Rocket Summer
    • Very big, like, "I mess up a lot but I promise this won't be one of those times" moods.
  4. Land Locked Heart // The Midnight
    • This song appears in "Road 96: Mile 0" which was a really fun addition to Road 96.
  5. Queensway // Coral Bones
    • I am an absolute sucker for some good piano and a horn or synth horn section
  6. Empty Nest // Silversun Pickups
    • I always love some Silversun Pickups and this is from their newest album, I identify much more strongly with some of their stuff from a couple years ago, probably just because it's what was on my driving playlist for a few years, but I'm personally pretty hard pressed to find a Silversun Pickups song I don't like.
  7. Echoes of You (Feat. Roger Joseph Manning Jr.) // Marianas Trench
    • More on the "I promise I'm definitely not losing it, I double pinky promise" front. Lots of big sound, good build-up, great all-around banger.
  8. I Can't Eat Money // 7 Days In Alaska
    • I'll be straight-up, I Can't Eat Money either, but money'd solve some material problems.
  9. Starlight // Mystery Skulls
    • I know artists don't love being compared, but Mystery Skulls is having his Daft Punk era.
  10. Six Feet // Patent Pending
    • A few years ago one of my friends asked "you ever just kind of casually wish you could stop existing?" and it wasn't in a suicidal sense but more like in the "this is all so hard and it feels like we're not getting anywhere or getting much out of it" sense. That whole millennial angst thing, I suppose.
  11. Informal Empire // WORLD ORDER
    • Straight-up banger that's in half Japanese for some reason.
  12. Never Game Over // Awake! Awake!
    • This feels like the ready player one of songs in terms of "haha wow 80s arcade games but it's a love song!" but it's less bad than I understand RP1 to be. Pure indulgence, though.
  13. That's Physics, Baby // Pool Kids
    • This (13-21) gets into stuff that's newer in my rotation, it hasn't made it onto a mixdisc before, I'm probably gonna cut myself a copy of this disc to get these wedged in there further.

  14. What Happened to Us // Paper Idol
    • Hits the ears good. Opening bells (vibraphone? IDK instruments) have a bit of an "Eastward game" vibe
  15. My Computer // Everything Everything
    • I also don't know why I'm in love with the future.
    • Minidisc being a retro-futurism vintage tech hobby I feel like there's a tinge of "I'm in love with the future we were being sold in the 1990s" -- minidisc, personal web hosting, 45/45 fiber from The Bells, etc.
  16. Start It Over // In Motive
    • Type of guy who has had one single long-term romantic relationship, which ended because he was a different sexuality, sure does have a lot of love related songs.
    • Probably? Again this is in the "haven't listened much" group, I'll realize which words I'm mishearing over the course of the next few weeks.
  17. Good Mood // Coleman Hell
    • Just light and upbeat, you gotta have a couple of those, another indulgence.
  18. 29 // Run River North

  19. Operator Error // We Are Scientists

  20. China Tiger // Merci

  21. The Implication // Parrotfish

  22. Seattle (Reworked) // Deaf Havana
    • This gets back to stuff I've had llonger, but it was slower so I put it at the end as a cooldown.
    • So a couple months ago I typed "Seattle" into Apple Music because it's such a favorite places and because I love that one Owl City song and this was for sure one of the better things to come out of it. The original version of this song is also great. This is for sure the standout of all the songs that were new at this point.
